Busy sewing

February 28, 2010

I have been busy with birthday present quilts.  My daughter cannot sleep without hers which makes me feel so happy that she likes it.  Only just got my nephews sent, two weeks late, hope he likes it.

I’ve already started a quilt for my mum.  She has a VW camper van so I got some Happy Campers by American Jane.  I was stuck for a while as to how to cut into it but have decided that my first quilts were a bit complicated so I’d make it nice and simple.  I can’t show yet because it is going to be a Mother’s Day gift.

I had the urge to create something pink over the weekend so I made this for Flo.  I think I prefer the back of the cushion to the front.

What do you think?

Just noticed that the spots match her wallpaper!  So co-ordinated.

Feeling the love

February 10, 2010

I run a small sewing club for the children at the school I work at.  We have been making love hearts for Valentines Day but the trouble is that they are very addictive and I can’t stop making them.  I have no idea what to do with them all but I have even got my eldest daughter making them.  Does this make me sad or really sad?

Not getting very far.

Happy New Year!!

A bit belated but better late than never.  The snow is getting a bit boring now.  I was sick of it before Christmas (ba-humbug) but only because I fell over whilst I was walking the dog.  I hurt myself too and had big purple bruises to prove that I shouldn’t be allowed out in the snow.

My sewing exploits haven’t been making much progress either.

This pile of string blocks proves it.  I did actually manage to sew them all together but need to get to my local sewing shop because I don’t have enough wadding to quilt it yet.

To cheer myself up I made this cute little cushion for the reading corner at school, although my daughters like it and want to keep it for their room.  I went a bit ‘freestyle’ with the quilting but I really enjoyed it.

I came across a website called ‘365 days of free motion quilting’ and it has inspired me to order a free-motion foot for my sewing machine.  I think I might be being a little ambitious here and free-motion quilting might be one of those things that I wish I’d never tried but on the website they make it look so cool and easy.  We’ll see what I can manage when it comes through the post, I’m imagining my tears of frustration already.  I’ll let you know how it goes.

My first attempt at a quilt

December 31, 2009

Hello

Thought I’d show my first attempt at a quilt.  I do love quilting but have only done cushions and bags so far.  I am very scared about quilting something as big as this, especially as my sewing machine is making some really strange nosies at the moment.

What scares me more than the quilting is the binding.  The more that I read about how to do it,  the more I think I’ll make a big mess of it.  But it has got to be done as I’m

giving this quilt to Vee for her seventh birthday.  What do you think?  I have spent hours taking the paper off the back, bet that there is a really easy technique for doing this but I did it the hard way.

I’m going to have to quilt it when she is in bed, hope the rattle on my machine pipes down.  I’ll let you know how it goes.

Thought I might get started.

December 30, 2009

Hello,

I am new to this and don’t exactly know what I am doing.  I have been lurking around blog land for some time but I’m one of those people who reads blogs but rarely comments.  I first found out about blogs when I was having ‘trouble’ with my eldest daughter.  I was told by her school that she was special needs and I disagreed with them.  So to the internet I went, to find out what other parents did in my situation and I ended up taking her out of school to home educate her.  Thanks to all the home educating bloggers I found the confidence and support to do this.

But I don’t want to blog about home education as she is now happily settled back into school (without the need for a statement or IEP).  So what I really want to do is to keep a record of what me and mine are up to in terms of the house, garden, sewing and trying to enjoy our lives.  ‘Tis also a test drive because I would love for my class at school to create their own class blog and I need to know what I’m doing before I can ask any of them to have a go.

So there it is.  My first ever blog.  It might get better, will even try a picture next time.
